Maroon 5 falls into too-cool posture
|
When Maroon 5 finally broke through with its "Songs About Jane" (Octone/A&M) album after two years of tireless pushing, the L.A. band became multiplatinum proof that, given enough sweat equity and major-label support, good songs could become hits and new bands could become superstars. Unfortunately, the band's follow-up trades in the shaggy, underdoggishness of the debut for shiny slickness and a brash, we-can-do-anything boastfulness that doesn't always work. "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" (Octone/A&M) is half of a great album, weighed down with some ill-advised experiments in which singer Adam Levine tries to be the next Prince or the band tries to be the next Police or, oddly, OutKast. The first single, "Makes Me Wonder," is the best of these stretches, a disco-flavored pop number. But it pales by comparison to Maroon 5's bread-and-butter ballads and angsty pop-rockers. The haunting "Goodnight, Goodnight" is a surefire hit, with its high-drama guitars and insta-sing-along rock chorus. "Better That We Break" is a piano-driven, Coldplay-ish number that lets Levine's emotional vocals shine and builds to an anthem that is undeniably grand. Throwing in a few more of those types of songs would go a long way toward making the ridiculous heavy-breather "Kiwi," which swipes a Prince-ish guitar solo and Michael Jackson staccato horns, a bit more palatable. Instead, we get two songs that seem based on The Police's "Every Breath You Take" and a bland version of "Heard 'Em Say," Levine's cool collabo with Kanye West, now called "Nothing Lasts Forever." Overall, "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" sounds like it came from a band that got too interested in being cool, rather than continuing to focus on being as good as it can be.
