Slumdog Millionaire

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

The movie which got a major boost because of the Oscar sweep — collecting over $200 million (Rs 1,000 crore) across the globe — is creating magic at the box office by hitting top ranks in Latin America (Argentina, Mexico and Chile), Australia and New Zealand, Europe (France, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland) and even Russia. In the UK, home to the film’s director Danny Boyle and lead actor Dev Patel, Slumdog is already the largest grosser (among movies which are still in cinemas) drawing $37 million (Rs 185 crore) from box office collections.

The movie — which, before its knockout performance, had almost gone for DVD release rather than the big screen — has made a staggering thirteen times of the amount that its makers had invested in the film ($15 million or Rs 75 crore).

Says Vivek Krishnani, head of distribution, marketing and syndication for Fox Star Studios India: “Post the Oscars there has been an increased interest in the movie from exhibitors all over the world, just as it has been in India too. The Oscars have opened up new markets for the movie.” In India the movie has grossed around Rs 32 crore from box office collections.

Mumbai's housing authority and the film's producer Christian Colson have reportedly said they will provide the two families proper housing. But both children continue to live in squalor, and neighbors have reportedly built an 8 by 5-feet metal structure to protect Azhar from the sun, according to the newspaper.

"Getting used to life back here in the slum again is proving tough for her and she has not wanted to see her friends since she got back. She just wants to spend all her time away from the slum now and I just hope we get the flat that has been promised to us," Rubina's father told the Daily Telegraph.

Kings of Leon 250 000 albums in two weeks!

Friday, November 14th, 2008

King of Leon hit record sales in Britain. 250 000 albums in two weeks!

Kings of Leon have vowed never to use politics to sell their mp3 music.
The US rockers have no intention of following in the footsteps of other bands who have declared their political orientation in order to sell more records.
Band member Caleb Followill explained: "For the most part I think politicians should stick to politics and musicians should stick to making mp3 music, you know?"
Bandmate Nathan Followill added: "It used to really bug me, when bands would really push politics on people, but I think they're different times now and I think that if there isn't something big that's done, I think we're all going Hades and it's just a bad time."
Caleb also believes the 2004 US presidential race sparked a rush of mp3 music acts to speak out about their political beliefs to "further their career".
He added: "2004 was just so messed up because you had bands getting political for all the wrong reasons. It wasn't because they actually believed in change or believed in something, they were using that as a stepping-stone to revive their career like and come out with an anti-American song or a pro-American and it was just, in the mp3 music world, every other band was like 'OK, everybody knows what you're doing, you're taking advantage of the situation to try to, you know, further your career', but you know, we've never been a band like that."
The full interview with the band will be broadcast on Ben Jones' 'Tuesday Night Live' on Britain's Absolute Radio on September 30 from 10pm.
